How Do I Know If My Air Ducts Need To Be Cleaned?
Much like everything else, air ducts have to be cleaned every so often for it to function optimally. Dirty air ducts are the last thing you want as they bring about health issues and where it hurts the most — your wallet. Electrical bills increase and if your HVAC system breaks down, the costs of repair will dwarf the cleaning fees.
However, it might be difficult for you to gauge how dirty your air ducts have become without actually looking inside of it. I mean, think about it, who would go around and look into the air ducts to see if they’re dirty? Luckily, you DON’T need to stick your head into the air ducts to determine if it’s time for a cleaning. Here are a few tips and tricks to determine if your air ducts are long overdue for a scrub!
Side note: as a general rule of thumb recommended by experts, one should have their air ducts cleaned every 2-3 years to maintain the health of the air circulation system.
Even though it is the job of the air filters to filter out contaminants, it is not normal for it to build up too quickly with dirt and debris. If you find yourself having to replace your air filters frequently, the problem may lie within the air ducts, with contaminants being trapped inside. Cleaning the air ducts will remove all these contaminants and prolong the lifespan of the air filters.
In general, your energy bills should be more or less the same throughout the years, depending on the seasons and your average usage. However, if you suddenly notice an uptick in your monthly bills for no reason that you can think of, it might be a sign of dirty air ducts. Why? That’s because your HVAC system is struggling to keep up the airflow through the clogged system, and thus using more energy to do so. Another explanation is faulty leaking ductworks, which can be inspected for during cleaning services.
Proper functional air ducts shouldn’t allow for rats and insects to call their home, as there should not be any corners for them to build their nests. Dirty ducts, however, might be a different story due to all the buildup. If you notice any signs of rodent or insect infestation, immediately call for expert advice and cleaning as it is very dangerous for health (you would NOT want rodent droppings in your air ducts).
Spotting black dots in and around the air vent intakes is another sign of your air vents needing a good cleaning. Mould is a very common allergen and hazardous to the health of your loved ones. Again, a proper air circulation system should NOT have any growth around it.
Not only are living things growing around the air ducts a bad sign, the accumulation of contaminants such as dirt or dust is also part and parcel of the signs of dirty air ducts. Think of it this way; there are so many contaminants within the system it’s pretty much overflowed out of the air vents. Ew.
If you notice your kids or grandparents suddenly developing coughs and sneezes out of the blue, it might be due to your HVAC system not doing its job properly. Allergens and contaminants not cleared by the system will enter the lungs of your loved ones, leading to respiratory issues. Protect your family with regular cleaning of the air ducts.
Notice the airflow in your bedroom is slower than that in the living room? It’s not you imagining things, airflow can and will get interrupted by blockages in the air ducts. A proper air circulation system ensures the consistent and smooth airflow through your home, but if your air ducts are dirty, it impedes this linear flow.
Lastly, close your eyes and listen to the ambient noise around you. If you can hear your air ducts even without doing that, that is a sign you need your air ducts cleaned. Even though normal air ducts have the distinct sounds of whooshes of fresh clean air and the motor whirring, it should stay as background noise and nothing else. Intrusive sounds such as bangs and pops might indicate the presence of excessive contaminants and blockages.
